The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Astera Health honors nurses who provide exceptional care with The DAISY Award, an international nurse recognition program that celebrates the compassion and skill nurses bring to patients and families every day. Throughout the year, you are encouraged to nominate a nurse for this award. Find the nomination form below.

About The DAISY Award

The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System). The Barnes family was awestruck by the clinical skills, kindness, and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this international award to say thank you to nurses who provide extraordinary care to patients and families every day.

What began as a thank you from the Barnes family has grown into a meaningful recognition program embraced by healthcare organizations around the world. More than 6,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing across the world are committed to honoring their nurses with The DAISY Award. Over 210,000 nurses have been honored, with more than 2.5 million nominations written.

Recognizing deserving nurses

Each DAISY Award honoree at Astera will be recognized at a public ceremony in their department and will receive a beautiful certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled “A Healer’s Touch.”

Additionally, everyone in the unit will celebrate with cinnamon rolls – one of Patrick’s favorite treats during his illness. The Barnes family asks that whenever and wherever nurses smell that wonderful cinnamon aroma, they stop for a moment and think about how special they are.

Criteria
